CCW/CPL Class Student Testimonials
The Following Are On File In Our Office:

"Rick, Sorry that it has taken me so long to thank you. Although the class alone can't protect me or my family from danger, it has improved our ability to defend ourselves. The techniques and information that we covered in the class have taught me to be more aware and prepared period. I am more confident and comfortable when I leave home, knowing that I'm better prepared to address potentially dangerous confrontational situations. Once again thank you and I look forward to Session II (Personal Protection Outside The Home Course)."
- Mr. A. L. Odell III, Auto Industry Employee, Southfield, Oakland County, Michigan 48075
"Hello Rick. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Just to let you know, I've got my CCW license and I bought a 9mm S+W (M&P) semi-automatic. I had intentions of getting a revolver, but after seeing and shooting your semi-automatic, I changed my mind. As for your class, I found that you were not only knowledgeable but you were also enthusiastic. What really impressed me was the fact that when we went to the gun range, I was a little short on money, you were kind enough to let me use your gun. This is what convinced me to buy a 9mm. I appreciate your help and I would (and do) recommend your class to anyone wanting to get their permit. Thank you."
- Mr. C. W. Miller, Retiree, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan 48219
"Rick, from the very beginning you showed a very professional demeanor. You also did this while being a friendly guy. You extended your knowledge, experience, and information, in a fun way but when it came time to get critical info or techniques across you became very serious to get the point across effectively. I totally appreciated your class and when I am ready to advance in my training in the area of becoming a 'PROFESSIONAL' in the use of a sidearm I will be in touch. I am sorry it took so long to get back to you but I pray that 'better late than never' applies. Sincerely,"
- Mr. M. Kleckler, Ferndale, Oakland County, Michigan 48220
"Rick Ector, you are a very funny man but very knowledgeable in the firearms department: 'It is not a bullet; it is called a round of ammunition!' 'Do not call it a weapon; it is a gun!' '8-1/2 x 11 center mass - it is going to be on the test!' I had a great time in the class. The eight hours really went quick. Keep up the good work, Rick!"
- Ms. D. R. Lambert, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan 48224

FAQs: Michigan CCW/CPL Eligibility Questions

Michigan CCW/CPL Eligibility Questions

  • Who Is Eligible To Apply For A Michigan CCW/CPL?
In general, any applicant who meets the following criteria "shall be" issued a Concealed Pistol License:
    • Must be at least 21 years of age
    • Must be a resident of Michigan
    • Must be a U.S. citizen or a resident alien
    • Must provide proof of pistol training from a certified firearms instructor
    • Must NOT have a domestic violence conviction
    • Must NOT be currently subject to a Personal Protection Order
    • Must NOT have been dishonorably discharged from the armed forces
    • Must NOT have any felony convictions
    • Must NOT have any pending felony charges
    • Must NOT have certain misdemeanor convictions within either the 8 year or 3 year period prior to the time of application (See info on the Michigan State Police web site)
    • Must NOT be subject to an order or disposition for any of the following:
      • Mental health order
      • Legally incapacitated
      • Involuntarily hospitalized
      • Been found not guilty by reason of insanity

  • With Respect To CPL Eligibility, Who Is A Resident Alien?
In general, a person with either a state of Michigan Driver's License or a state of Michigan ID Card AND a "Green Card" is eligible to apply for a CPL.

  • Which Class Is The Proper Class To Take For A Michigan CCW/CPL?
Per info on the Michigan State Police's web site, Michigan law requires that the class used for the purpose of meeting the pistol training prerequisite for a Concealed Pistol License (CPL/CCW) must meet the following standards:
    • "Safe storage, use and handling of a pistol including, but not limited to, safe storage, use and handling to protect a child"
    • "Ammunition knowledge and the fundamentals of pistol shooting"
    • "Pistol shooting positions"
    • "Firearms and the law, including civil liability issues and the use of deadly force
    • "Avoiding criminal attack and controlling a violent confrontation"
    • "All laws that apply to carrying a concealed pistol in this state"
    • "At least 8 hours instruction, including 3 hours of firing range time; which requires firing at least 30 rounds of ammunition"

Thus, it is important for a prospective CCW/CPL applicant to evaluate the agenda and syllabus of his intended firearm training service provider. For the record, the NRA's "Personal Protection in the Home" Class meets the aforementioned requirements.
Furthermore, the state of Michigan requires that the class be taught by a certified firearms instructor. The National Rifle Association (NRA) is listed as a reference resource on the Michigan State Police web site. All NRA certified instructor have credentials from the NRA with their Instructor ID numbers which can be verified to guarantee that a given person is qualified to train students.

Caveat Emptor: "Anyone who presents a certificate of completion to a gun board knowing the individual did not satisfactorily complete the course, is guilty of a felony punishable by 4 years in prison and or a $2,500 fine."

  • How Long Is The Michigan CCW/CPL Class?
By statute, the firearms training class must be at least eight hours in length. Any student who takes a training class that is less than eight hours in length and subsequently submits a certificate to a county gun board is guilty of a felony that is punishable by four years in prison and or a $2,500 fine. Also, any instructor who bestows a certificate to a student that did not satisfactorily complete the class is also guilty of a felony and is subject to the same penalties.
